>Fellows, I finally seem to have gotten my computer back up to snuff, and Sunday I ordered the Medium Shoulder Plane that I have wanted for so long. It arrived today and "What a machine!" Superlative quality.
Anyway, since I was going to gloat, I decided to also let you all know what I found with my Mk II sharpening jig. You may or may not recall me posting about not being able to hold blades and chisels straight, and the guage didn't seem to register the blade correctly.
Rob emailed me with assurances that my square was out, or I wasn't measuring it correctly. Now, I didn't take offense, because I have been associated with Customer Service in the past, and know how difficult it is to determine the client's ability and knowledge level when attempting to solve a problem. I just dealt with it, until I got irritated with it, then a little more nosy, and began to really troubleshoot the thing. By the way, several others either posted or emailed me and expressed the same problem at the time. I think I may have come up with a solution to some of the problems.
I took the blade clamp off of the jig, in order to see if there were any surface burrs, or the like. I looked at it closely, then remounted it 180 degrees from where it was originally, and it works lots better. Go figure.
The trouble, I think, is that either way you install it, it looks right, but if it's reversed, it won't clamp as well, at least as I saw it.
So, if any of you want to investigate it, please do, and let us all know if it helps.
If not, just call me a bumblehead, and disregard everything you just read, okay?
Anyway, I have a new Medium Shoulder plane, now, and many of you don't!
