More Questions on Drawboring

>I found the string below about drawboring interesting and have some questions that might be better addressed in a new thread. (Thread? String? Rope? whatever...)
1) Using wood from a woodpile for the pins; Should one avoid branches and just use trunk wood? Branch wood has compression problems, among others.
2) Drawbore pins; I know this has been discussed before but what is the ideal shape for one of these? Also it seems to me that it should not be hardened and tempered. Being brittle at either end would be a disaster.
