Can you identify this shooting plane?

I picked up this shooter at an auction this weekend. It's just a curiousity thing for me, but would appreciate any thoughts as to it's origins. It weighs in at just under 10 lbs. The entire plane including handle is iron. The blade is 1 1/8" wide, 1/4" thick, and I can tell from the markings that when it was new the blade was 2" longer than it currently is. As best I can tell, the blade is bedded at 44 degrees. The body is 14" x 2 5/8". The sole is unusual in that it is ground only along two 5/8" side rails. The center of the sole is recessed and remains rough cast, which of course doesn't matter since it only tracks forward and backwards.
There are no clear markings that I can see. In the front, very rough, it may say "M 1" or "M 4" or "M 11", but the letters are so rough, that it could also an artifact of the casting and I'm just seeing things. ;-)
Thanks for any insite,
Dave
