>Good afternoon all,
I recently purchased an Ashley Iles chisel, 7/8" English pattern, to try out before committing funds to buy a set. Gave the chisel a honing and set out to try it out cleaning off some poplar dowel pegs. The edge crumbled! I ground out the chips (by hand) and tried it again, this time in a piece of oak. Two strong taps with my mallet and the new edge is gone!
Anyone else have this problem?

>the chisels are ground 25 degrees at the factory. add 5 degree microbevel on the chisel and see what happens. It is of course possible you have a bum one - it rare but it happens - but try that first. If that doesn't work call or email me and we will swap it out.

>Thanks for the offer Joel, however I prefer to try to work it out by honing the edge back a bit. I suspect the edge was weakened by the hollow grinding and as you said the 25 degree bevel. If I find this doesn't do the trick, then I'll give you a call.
To all others out there, upon re-reading my original post, it came off as a rant and I didn't mean it to. Goes to show that one should read your post before hitting the "post it" button.

Chisel bevel angles

>I've had my AI chisels for a while and noticed poor edge retention on the narrower blades. My 2" chisel does just fine with a 25 degree angle but my 1/4", 3/8" and 1/2" chisels do much better with a higher angle. Adam C. talked about this once I think as a general problem with chisels with the larger widths having more success with a lower angle. I know the common knowledge has the old formula of bench and paring chisels needing different angles but so far I've found it to be more a function of the width. I think this is a good question to follow up with others' experience.

( a small microbevel gives strength without detracting too much from penetration)
Paring chisels 20+5
Mortise chisels 30+5 (or a little more)
