Looking for a combo plane

>Hello folks, I'm looking around at combo planes (Stanley 45/50, etc). I plan on using whichever one I get but I am still a beginner at handplaning. Are any of these planes user friendly at all? It seems that the 50 has less parts but it also does not have a secondary handle up front. I know getting individual planes for each size dado etc would be better but LOML has been very understanding (got me a Veritas Jointer plane for Xmas) so I don't want to push it. She doesn't have a problem with one of these types of planes. Any comments, opinions are welcome. Thanks in advance, Guy
