H&R's for Stanley�s/Records are good for straight grained wood for the most part. Hardwood/jungle varities require a skewed blade set at 50 deg. or so angle.

You have something very special IMHO John.

Just listen to me...you don't want them, they will cause you nothing but trouble. Email me, and send you my adress and you can get rid of those foul devices.

Why don't you give them a try before you sell them. At least you'll have the answer to half of your question, and you can answer that question next time it comes up.

I read somewhere that there are basically three levels - from highest to lowest in price - (1) all 18 planes are by the same maker and have the same owners mark so they were originally purchased as a set (2) all 18 planes by the same maker but different owners marks - so they were not sold together as a set - and may vary greatly in age ( like buying a stanley 1950 number 3 and a 1980 number 4) and harlequin set - each pair is generally by the same maker but have different makers in the set. While there is some debate, some suggest that you want the same maker for any pair because the numbering is not consistent across manufacturers so a #12 hollow by one manufacturer may not be the mirror image of a #12 by a different manufacturer. Others argue that you don't need the hollow to match the round anyway and that you can save a lot of money by buying them individually ( or by pairs ) and most users won't need a complete half set and they won't use all 18. Tony's site lists a harlequin set for $425 in the wooden plane section http://www.antiquetools.co.uk/tools.htm

and he lists one set of H & R all by the same maker and owner for $795 ( #1463) and another set all by the same maker - but different owners for $795 (#1464 ) in his recent additions page. Of course he contradicts one of the rules I heard listed above in that he is selling the set with one owners stamp plus two planes not normally included in a half set for the same price as the mixed set from one owner. One hting most would agree on is that the wooden h & r should do a better job that the Stanley once they are set up right - good luck with your sale.
