Does anyone make do without scrapers?

This has been churning in the back of my mind since reading Derek's review of the LV BUS. If I recall correctly there was at least one instance where the wood was planed from both directions without adverse effects.
Would the use of a SMT, Holtey, Sauer & Steiner, etc. result in a lack of need for a scraper?
Just curious,
