>In an earlier post I put up pictures of 3V plane irons that Bruce Norton and I made for Wiley Horne and Steve Elliott.

During production of those plane irons we also made 4 CPM M4 plane irons to test the feasability of using and even more abrasion resistant steel for plane irons. We made 2 plane irons for No.5 plane and 2 for a No. 4 1/2 plane.

One of the questions to be ansewered was could we effectively sharpen the very hard and wear resistant tool steels. These tools were hardened and then tempered 4 times to give a final Rc hardness of 63 to 64. The goal was to produce an iron with a balance of both hardness and toughness. The back of the iron was lapped with diamond powder on cast iron plates. Use the sequence of 30; 15; 3.0 and 1.0 micron paste on cast iron. The edge was rough ground with a 7 inch 46 grit very soft pink wheel on a 3600 rpm grinder followed by finish grinding with a 100 grit wheel to give a wire edge. The edge was honed with 3 micron followed by 1 micron diamond paste to produce a razor edge. ANSEWER TO QUESTION NO 1. YES YOU CAN SHARPEN THESE TOOL STEELS TO A RAZOR EDGE in a short time.

Below is a picture of shaving taken with a Clifton no. 5 plane on red oak. The small shaving laying on the plane in the middle of the picture is a paper thin maple shaving I took setting up the blade in the plane.

I am interested in the possibilities of modern steels, particularly powder steel, to make good tough tools that still sharpen well because of fine grain size. If you look at graphs of fracture toughness against Rockwell values, some of the powder steels look very good for tools where chipping is a problem.... the stuff I'd like to try is RWL34 from Damasteel. Not a damascus pattern fancy one, just fine grain and very well regarded by knife makers I gather. Have you come across this one? I am going to get a couple of chisels made, I think....

>When we started this investigation the goal was to make a mortise chisel that would survive a 25 degree bevel for easy penetration. That led us to CPM 3V which excells in toughness. At Rc60 it will bend, not break! It makes an awesome chisel, and then others found that it made very good plane irons as well. Will check your steel suggestion out.

Looked at the RWL34 and looks like it has the same composition as Crucible's 154CM which is one of the knife makers favorite stainless steels. My brother has some 154 CM that he is going to make knives out of.

We did not use the stainless steel because we did not need the corresion resistance. The non stainless steels have a better balance of wear resistance and toughness than the stainless versions. CPM 3V has wear resistance that is better than most of the stainless steels but has far better toughness.

I have attached a link to CPM's site for S30V it has litte better wear resistance than the 154 CM but if you look at the comparison chart the CPM 3V has a litte better wear resistance than either the 154CM or the S30V but dramatically better toughness than either the 154CM ( which should be equivalent to the RWL34) or the S 30V.

Good luck with your experiment. Let us know how you come out. If you don't try something new you never learn anything new.

>It would certainly be fascinating to make and test some blades in each of these and see whether the 'test' results do actually predict real behaviour in normal use. I'll have a look at the Crucible materials particle size etc (which is one of the key advantages of any PM steel) vs the Damasteel version. Certainly the CM steels give a great range to choose from.

As for stainless, sometimes it would be nice not to have to worry about corrosion - maybe people working in green wood would find a 'high-performance' stainless quite useful?

If you or Phil are making things for sale, I might well be a willing buyer :-)
