Mystery wood

>A friend of mine gave me two big chunks of wood that looks like a sawn 8/4 block. They were used for transporting milled stock and had big nails all over. I removed the nails and started planing using my number 6 that I just resharpened. Now I can see the surface pretty well but I am completely lost. I cant identify it. I showed a picture to some friends and they dont know either. Some say cherry and someone mentioned brown oak, an old essence not even used anymore.
The wood is suprisingly hard to plane. It is dense, prone to tear out easily and the end grain is as hard as steel.
Any idea ?
