>See this article from the Louisville Courier. Guy bought two 'J. Hemings' planes on the 'Bay, and they match profiles at Monticello!

(Jefferson left Monticello's ww'ing tools to Heming - and it is the heirs of John Heming's sister Sally Heming who have had so much trouble being recognized as descendants of Jefferson.)

He mentioned (without apparent irony) that this might 'bring more [Heming tools] out of the woodwork' ... so, anyone got more Heming planes out there?

Hemings do you think there were in the last 200 years and what does the J.Heming stamp really prove?

Right off the bat a couple things don't add up..First would be very rare in 18th century Va. for a slave to be able to read and write and unheard of to stamp his name on his masters property and Hemings wasn't freed till 1826. The plane shown in the photo doesn't look to me to be an 1700s plane to me but rather just a common mid 1800s one. Matter of fact I believe I have a simular one stamped W.Bonny....maybe a rare one that Billy the Kid used befor he took up a life of crime?

...I think these guys have a $50 plane and a $1,000 story....Todd

If Tom Elliot and the conservators at Monticello looked at these planes and found no reason to discredit them, why be so quick to discredit everything. Give it a little time and see where it goes.
