>I was flippin' through the latest LN catalogue today and noticed that the mitre plane (is it a #9?) is bedded at 20� and the iron is 25�...resulting in a 45� effective cutting angle. Well, that's the same as a Bailey-style bench plane. I've always been under the impression that low-angle was the way to go when working end-grain. Am I mis-informed, confused, befuddled or all of the above? This relates to my wanting to build a dedicated shooting plane. I was going to go for a 12� bed and 25� for the iron.

Which way would you go? Forget the fact that I can add all sorts of different angled irons and use it as a smoother in a pinch. That won't be happening so it is not part of theequation.

Can't answer as to your state of mind . But shooting edges is accomplished well with nearly any included angle. I.e., I've even shot edges with a 55 degree plane on a shooting board because I was too lazy to walk to the plane cabinet I had at the time. Does require more effort and potential for pulling grain out though.

Planing something like a butcher block, end-grain surface is not something the #9 was designed for. However, because shooting sometimes includes long-grain sides, the higher angle is a great compromise to mitigate tear-out and 45 degrees does work well.

When I am shooting strictly end grain miters or a squaring an end-grain piece, I use a plane bedded at 12 degrees with a 20-25 degree bevel as it just slices through with minimal effort.

Maybe I'll find a beater #5 and tune it to work the way it ought and see how it goes. Worst case is that I still end up build the low-angle plane (probably will anyway. I tend to get complusive about these ideas).
