>I just bought some leather and a green stick for a strop. Before I make my strop, I decided to try and put the green stuff on MDF which some people have done. However, now I wonder about some stuff:
1) How much should I rub on the MDF (or eventually a strop?)
2) Do I "strop" both the bevel and the back of the bevel like when using a stone?
3) how do I know when I will need to put more green stuff on the strop?

>The thinnest full covering possible. It is hard to work down through a layer of the stuff, except when applied to a motorized buff. That is what it is really for, there the heat melts throguh the wax exposing the compound. Not to say you won't get good result by hand also.
You can do it either way, but normally I do both sides of the edge. It used to be typical to polish the back and then just resharpen the bevel, maybe with a little work on any wire edge, but you will get better results working both sides.
The compound will become pretty black, and/or it will stop cutting.
