Unless this plane has some serious sentimental value, I would look for another #5 at auction, flea market, yard sale, eBay etc. #5's are so common that finding a complete plane in good shape shouldn't cost more than $10. Also, it will be harding to find just the wood and an iron. Much easier to get a whole plane. You might save a buck or two buying a rusted and cracked plane and taking the parts you need for the current plane.

These guys here know more about them than Bailey himself so you've got all the help you need. Mine did'nt have any sentimental value before but it sure does now and I know WAY too much about planes ( "What the heck is a FROG ? ) ! Pick up the woods on the bay and finnish 'em the way YOU want. Then a HOCK blade. You'll thank yourself ( and gloat ) everytime you use it ! It is the journy as much as the end product !

Don't know if it's worth it...

>Does it have the threaded rod and screw for the tote? Do you have a lathe? you can turn a new knob I suggest fruit wood and make your new tote just a saw a rasp, file and some sand paper. do you have a cap iron or is it missing that also? Imight have an extra iron I will have to look but as others have said it is best to buy a after market one. if it is real rusty talk to Todd O about zapping I have never had to do that I just lap the base and sides and it is usual all it takes other than a good cleaning with a tooth brush.
