LN Side Rabbet Planes *LINK*

>Last week I made a jig to router produce a 3� tapered sliding dovetail. Approximately 3/8� deep.

2 of the joints that I made are a wee bit too tight as they lock in the last 1/8�.

(No glue trial fit. I know that I could send them home with some glue and 1 mallet blow).

I would prefer to increase the width of the female dovetail.(What do you call it?)

I can easily make the male dovetail narrower but I know that it�s the female side that�s not 100% correct.

I would like to know if you can use LN 98/99 to increase the width of sliding dovetail? (female side). Would they tilt enough to get to the bottom of the angle? I do not currently own a pair. Using a chisel is a little bit, hit and miss. Or should I say �gouge-ey�.

>Sure you can use the pair for it. The sole is very narrow and tapered (lookin from front or end) It is best made to fit a femal dovetail part of the joint. I did exactly that once or twice already ;-) as the dovetail joint is something that needs a lot of practice, I always have to use the 98/99.

>I find that this is where a 79 excells. It's longer than the 98/99 and you can attach a fence to it to give you a consistant angle while you plane away. The bad thing is the 79 isin't being produced anymore. So if you can't wait, the 98/99's are the way to go. Besides their prettier to look at...

>That's right Jack, but some folks cut first dadoes with a router and use the 98/99 to make out of the dado a femal DT part. That's because in most cases the router bit doesn't fit to the dovetail plane. So they adjust the DT femal part to the bit's angle.

I first thought of screwing a wooden angled batten on the 99/98ers fence. For that I would have to drill two holes in the fence. I hesitated, and went on freehand. That works to, if you have a sliding bevel at your side to control inclination.

Agree completely on the idea that the male part is made to fit the DT housing.

As Scott has noted, the Stanley #79 may be used for trimming a sliding DT since it has provision for a custom fence. I should add that the #98/99 also has provision for a fence, but the #79 is a lot cheaper.

I have yet to use my #98/99, received 2 weeks ago, but I can state without fear of rebuttal that the #79 is a terrific plane. I cannot imagine how one gets by without a side rabbet plane!

I demoed the #79 in trimming a sliding DT joint in my recent review of the Veritas Router Plane. Picture sequence below.

Note that you have the choice of trimming the male or the female section (I think of them as tails and pins).

I'll admit to still using the things, but I've never liked them. Still, never did find a faster way to screw up a piece of wood.

>Jack, damn, you're right again. Sometimes I used an own made dado plane. But since I got a DT plane from Steve, which cuts both parts, I use the 98/99 to fit tongue and groove, and of course dadoes and take off a few shavings of DT housings.

A router, yep I do have one, but merely imagining noise or dust it makes... I prefer hand tools and leave the router in the cabinet.

Marc, who has two German shephards, and they are hungry sometimes, but never helped me bitin out wood, only sleepin while I was working

>Yes Jack, it performs very well. Here it is, making a housing's right side with a selfmade depth fence and an angled batten as guiding fence(10 � to square). Mine's made in cocobolo. Once I will have time it will get an honorable depth stop.
