>Hi All, I have gotten to the best stage in bench making, getting to use it! Last night I drilled the holes for the holdfasts (3/4 for now) and they work great. I am now using them and the plane stop to flatten and smooth the ash used for the vise. The weekend I will be finishing that off and smoothing the top and applying the finish (danish oil and wax...) then drilling the holes for the deadman and attaching this crochet which should be the last piece to the puzzle.

As for sharing, I have received a lot of good advice (directly or through lurking) and purchased some great tools from great guys so I thought sharing what I have accomplished with those tools and advice is a good way to say thanks.

Nice job. You and I are at the same point in buildling one of these. I'm just installing the lower shelf now. Yours looks great.

It's a bit strange to see someone working on a bench that is in the same state of completion as mine.

>Well, being a little cheap I didn't want to splash out too much cash for a bench that might not have turned out very good. I was considering using poplar for the whole thing as I don't think I have ever seen SYP here in montreal. I went with construction lumber from Home Despot, so I guess I used Fir/Hemlock. For the legs I went with 3 sections of 2x6 glued together. The rails are 2x4 and the top is made from 2x10 ripped in half. For all the wood I think I spent maybe $170 Canadian, that includes the $20 I spent on the 8/4 ash for the vise (2x8 - 8') at the local lumber mill.

I managed to finish everything this weekend (lots of rain, no skiing) and I just have to get the oil and paste for the top and it should be ready by next weekend. I will post more photos to my site later.
