Which plane to cut rabbet?

>For a 10 yr. old boy working mainly with poplar, which plane is easier to learn to cut small rabbets (say, 3/8" X 3/8")? My son wants to make some photo frames. It's a good opportunity for him to learn to cut rabbets (and for me to get a plane ;-) ) The focus is "easy to learn."
I'm thinking of either the L-N 60 1/2 R ($120 this month from Woodcraft) or the Veritas medium shoulder plane ($149).
If you tell me that I should get the L-N 140, I'm not gonna to argue ;-)
I have several bench planes and block planes and a Veritas bull-nose, but none of them can do the job.
Thanks,
