>All I can say is that you can find a great set of wooden H&R all from the same maker for about the same price (475-500$). To me those metal attachments for a record 405 are not as efficient as just reaching for the right plane for the job.

>Regardless of whether it's a digression, I think it's a very good point. Quite often a do every thing jack-of-all trades is a master of none ;-). Having dedicated hollow and rounds is certainly cheaper. Sour grapes?? I think not.
What's the going rate for used H&R woodies these days? Was it $10 or $15 a piece? I just received a hollow this past Christmas. The person who gave it to me said he picked it up at a garage sale that he just happened to be passing by. I thought planes sold in garage sales were only an urban legend, but given how common H&R's once were and the fact even our nearest Cracker Barrel restaurant chain has two hanging on the wall as decoration, I'm not too surprised.

I have been watching that set and another set from last week that went for some serious $$$. I bid on both sets but that's far too high a price to pay. Both had about the same back story: someone bought a set, left them in the wrappers, and they sat unused (along with a number of other tools) for decades. Many comments:
1) These and the other set got pricey darned quick. This set is not done climbing...(I *could* take a guess on the price but I'll wait until it's over). Since they are pretty much NOS, they *should* go for a high price. The set from last week did...
2) One has to wonder how many other tools have been treated like this set. Someone bought them...and then just left them unused, sitting on a shelf.
3) I bought a "user" set from Tony Murland for about $220. However that did not include the Nosing piece. I picked up a "new" one in the wrapping for about $40 from ebay. So I guess my set is about $260 or so. I have boxes for 2 of the 9 pieces. 6 of them are plated with a darker material and the other 3 are shiny new nickel plated. I don't think they are the cadmium plated ones though from the WW2 era. It's very easy to see all were pretty much unused.

About a year ago, Tony Murland had a Record 405 that included all the extra bases plus the extra blades (from Clifton) for about $910.

I agree with the "jack of all/master of none" comments though. Multi-planes are "fidgety" when compared to a purpose built set and I think a full wood bed is also more preferential.
It is hard to compare the pricing of a set of Hollows and Rounds to the odd pair one finds here and there. A set offers design flexibility and focus (make the project to the design rather than make the design to the planes). Some Hand Tool courses are taught with a limited number of moulding planes specified as a requirement. Instructors point students to makers.
Moulding planes are near and dear to my heart right now. As soon as we can get a couple more inventory runs done, we will be able to get back into this project.
Yes... Sam Simpson... ideas which we discussed a couple of years ago are nigh at hand...
