customer service and my new toy

Tony Zaffuto

>To begin, I would like to give a public thank you to Rob Lee and his group at Lee Valley. I emailed Rob several weeks ago with a "special request and/or handling". This was for his low angle block plane, with chamfer attachment.

My email was a week or so before Christmas and probably in their busiest of times. Rob replied that they would accomondate my request and through several messages with several of his employees, I was informed the plane was ready to ship. I received it yesterday!

Quite frankly, this special order was quicker than several other mail order firms for stocked items! Many thanks Rob and thanks to your people too!

Now to the toy: I've been looking for a Stanley 65 chamfer shave for sometime and have not found one in my price range. So I turned to the Lee Valley low angle block plane with chamfer attachment. It works like a dream, on both long and end grain. I also ordered a ball and tail wood handles for the plane. Wow! Those handles turn the plane into a mini-bevel up smoother that is a pure pleasure to use.

I must be missing something

Time to bust Rob's chops

Dave Anderson Chester, NH

>Sometime LV customer service doesn't meet their promises though. I ordered several items before Christmas and I was told one of them was backordered until February. They asked if I still wanted to order it for February, and I replied in the affirmative. It arrived yesterday Rob. December 28th is NOT February 2006.

Running, ducking, and hidin', all at the same time.

Yeah, Dave, doesn't just tick ya off when a company exceeds its promises? Sheesh. When will they ever learn?

>I really didn't want to post what was special for fear that poor Rob would be overwhelmed with similar requests! Mine was a very minor cosmetic hangup I had with the circular rings on the plane.

True to form, I was taken care of by simply supplying me one without the rings on the side of the plane!

Over the past 24 hours I have had the plane, I have honed the blade and put on the ball and tail handles and have played around a good bit. The plane performed extremely well on some QS white oak. The chamfer attachment works beautifully. All in all, the plane is a real sweetie pie! (didn't want to say sweetheart). Now bear in mind, I have plenty of other planes and specifically as far as block planes go, a number of vintage iron, a LN 60-1/2 and a LN 60-1/2R.

This LV plane really shines with the ball and tail handles. The bevel up crowd should really take a look at this one! Anyhow not being able to let anything alone, I just may have one of the machinists I employ flatten the sides of this plane body to give it a bit of a Bedrock look (just kidding Rob).

>That's not a special order; that's just asking for the Mangiameli option...

Have you seen the rear tote they're bringing out for it, Tony? Sounds like you'll be a certain customer for that one ;~) I'd probably be one too, if I hadn't made a new year's resolution to buy wood, not tools.

Cheers, Alf

>Rob emailed me about the new tote. He called it a #3 size bevel up smoother!

This plane was my only extragance this holiday season (right)! I also bought my five year old daughter a Kunz squirrel tail plane. She enjoys my shop and now can make her own curlies. We had a great time several weeks ago cutting out Santas and Christmas trees, which she insisted on using sandpaper on prior to painting. So, she's got to learn, hence the plane.

Actually, the Kunz is not a bad little plane. Fits the hand well, and the blade sharpened up well. Since my GIT will only be using it on pine and such, the sharpening should last a while.

>Well Alice, we'll certainly be checking up on you to see how long you can keep that New Years resolution. Personally, I don't make resolutions and certainly wouldn't paint myself into a corner by making one like that. Yee gads, you can't have enough tools.... Nobody does. It's positively anti-consumer.

Just wait until you try the block plane out on the shooting board. THEN you'll be asking Rob to put the rings back in! :>)

>I don't think so. With the ball and tail attached, it may do the trick very well.

Sides are pretty substantial, although I have not checked them for squareness and I did not order the plane to use for shooting. My LN BU jack is my shooting tool.

Primary purpose is use as a chamfering tool and very much secondary, because of the ball and tail, as a small smoother.

Mangiameli option

ydb1md

>How many of their planes are available with the "Mangiameli" option? I wish I'd known about that before I purchased my LAS and BUJ. Those "circles" are the only thing that spoils the design for me.

live and learn I guess . . .

>Mmm Chris, I was not aware that the BUJ had circles (or perhaps I have a rogue version) :>)

While I was teasing before when Tony mentioned his circleless block plane, more seriously this is an important feature IF you plan to use the LAS (or LAJ - was that what you meant?) on a shooting board. The circles are not decoration - they are finger grips.

For the rear tote? I don't know; Rob brought across a cosmetic prototype to the tool show over here in November though, so it's off the drawing board at any rate.
