>I forgot: I made the toe piece out of lignum and milled out a large dovetail to slide in and out of the walnut plane body. Then I milled out a stopped t-slot for my t-bolt and knurled nut to clamp down when the desired throat opening was set. I only finished the sides with BLO and wax and I left the sole alone. If the body warps, I can always reflatten and I don't have to worry about opening the throat too much b/c heck, it's adjustable!!! Now all I have to do is sharpen the iron and then I'll have some fun.

Was it hard to find the LV or did you have some around for a while? I didn't know that was commercially still available.

>Dave, thanks for your comments. As for the LV, I was lucky enough to score a few small boards a while ago. I kept it around for awhile thinking that someday I'd make something out of it. And well, it paid off. I really hope someone out there can try and grow more of this stuff for future generations of woodworkers--it's a pretty amazing species.

>Dave, Lignum Vitae is still readily available from a number of the good suppliers of tropical and exotic hardwoods. I use it regularly for the wooden heads of my plane adjusting hammers. The toughest trick is to pick pieces which are thoroughly dry. In this case, older and drier is better and the best way to check is to heft two pieces of as close to the same size as possible and then pick the lighter one. If the LV is even a bit wet, it will dry and check on you, so choose carefully. I get most of mine from Tradewinds in Grafton, VT. No affiliation, but they are my best exotics supplier.

>Wow, I'm impressed! You got the translation right. That's my name in Chinese. There's not real story behind it other than that was the name my parents gave me. When I was in college, my mom had a stamp made for me carved out of stone. I liked the way the characters looked and decided to have it etched into a branding iron. Now I try to personalize everything I make with my brand.
