Blade grinding problem
Jerry Nicholson
>Got my new grinder and new LV grinder jig set up. Reground the bevel on a nice Stanly 2 inch plane blade and then found it had a slight skew. No sweat - resquared the blade in the holder and ground it again - still skewed. Went to work with my new LV MK II sharpening guide and new Norton stones, expecting the blade to hone square. Guess what - STILL SKEWED! I was about to decide that hand sharpening on sandpaper was as good as the new fancy tools. Even considered sending a nastygram to LV. Then I got out my digital caliper (with the big readout for my old eyes) and discovered that the blade tapered in width by .030 in the length of the blade. No wonder I can't grind it square! I checked a LV 2 3/8 blade and its width varied no more than .001. Checked a different Stanley blade and found it to be within .005 in width. Can't necessarily trust the first results from new tools.
