Replacement of Yankee Screwdriver Locking Ring

>My brother in law has a mid-size Yankee Screwdriver. The part that locks the spindle of the screwdriver in the retracted position broke. He ordered the new part from Stanley Tools, but has not been able to install it on the screwdriver. It seems to be too small in circumference. Do the three sizes of screwdrivers take different size locking rings? If anyone can answer that question and has instructions for installing the ring, we would appreciate it.
