Old plane mysteries
Stephen Kirk in Quakertown PA
>My dad picked me up an old (by the looks of it) wooden smoother, with what looks like "G.B. Gillet" stamped into the front. The plane is a 13" long, 3" wide, and the rear section is carved out and has what appears to be a back saw handle attached. Pretty comfortable, actually, as I feel it. The iron is rusted out but I can read "Hancock Tool Co Extra Steel" on it. The blade may clean up as there doesn't seem to be any pitting. The plane body unfortunately has some cracks, and my need a new throat insert (looks like one was already added). It also needs a new wedge. The plane doesn't have a wedge pin, but instead has a grooved area for the blade, chipbreaker and wedge to fit into. The top of the iron is a bit mushroomed, so somebody has been pounding on it.
Anyone have any ideas of what this might be, other than a personally made plane? I can get some pictures posted if anyone is interested.
