mortise chisel - robert sorby OUT, ray iles IN

frank shic (walnut ck, ca)

>after watching klausz's mortise and tenon video and seeing him whack out the mortise so effortlessly i went back to the garage and tried to emulate him with a robert sorby mortise chisel i bought from rockler but i was confounded by how many smacks i had to administer and how fragile the chisel seemed when i was levering out the waste. all the previous talk about mortise chisels got me thinking and... purchasing one FINE chisel from ray iles and although it's probably the most expensive hand tool i've bought so far, but you would NOT believe how seriously this BEAST hogs out wood! i didn't even sharpen the chisel yet but i was EASILY able to chop out 1/2" depth in a couple of strokes compared to my previous mortise chisel. derek and hank were right! thanks dudes! this chisel ROCKS!!!

>Does Frank use a butt or mortise chisel for dovetails?. I am surprised that you are using a mortise chisel. Am I confused?

Thanks,

>I think Frank mentioned he was talking about a mortise and tenon video, not the dovetail one.

>frank,

When the time comes, what sharpening system do you use and

is there anything different about sharpening that D2 steel?

One of those English Mortise chisels are near the top of my Christmas list.

>tom, i was just going to use cheapo sandpaper aka scary sharp to sharpen this MONSTER of a chisel. it's nice to know that if i happen to get attacked by any vampires in the garage that i can easily beat him/her off with this baby!

>Frank, which Sorby did you have. I have the Sorby heavy Duty sash mortice chisel which is 14 1/2 long and have had no troubles with it - is that the same as the one you had? Barry

>Tom, I use Norton water stones to sharpen the Ray Iles D2 mortise chisels. No special technique required. I think scary sharp would work fine too.
