A Question about Folding Rules (on The Porch, too)

I picked up my 6' folding carpenter's rule with the sliding brass insert today and was saddened to discover that the third hinge joint is loose. Is there a way to correct this? I suspect that it was exposed to undue forces whilst in a milk basket of tools Her Ladyship helped me pack and remove from weather's harm. It sat in that basket for awhile, now it sort of flops about an eighth of an inch. Given that my history with these types of rules is less than perfect, one would think that I'd just give up and go the way of the retracting tape measure; but such is not the case. I'd really like to take it back to its original, noble uniformity of fold. FWIW, I can't detect any sign of damage and only suspect poor packing and undue stress as the source of the injury.
TIA
