One complete chair devil

Skip in Falls Church

>I finally finished up one of the two chair devils I've been making. I put the finish (2 coats of BLO) on last week and made the blade today. To recap, I made the body out of Jatoba and the clamping block out of apple. The body is about 12" long and 1 3/8" high. The body and the clamping block are about 7/8" thick. The wear plate is made from sheet brass (about 0.09") bent to about 1 1/8" diameter. The throat is about 3/16" at the wear plate and 1/4" at the top. The blade is made from a cut up saw blade about 0.03" thick and the beveled to 30 or so degrees.

I gave it a try this afternoon and it seems to work fine - definitely no problem with the throat clogging. The second devil (also in the pictures) is done except for a blade and finish.

>Again Skip, nice job!

Those are some hefty wear strips. I know you're working at an article, I hope it goes into some detail about how you form & fit them.

>Thanks Greg,

I'm starting nights tonight so I'm planning on trying to find a little spare time to start putting the article together. The heavier wear strips weren't that hard to make - but I did learn a few things that I hope will make it easier for anyone that wants to make them.
