Help! I'm busting plane totes... (!)
David Hammond, in Powder Springs GA
>I've been picking up a few old woodies out of the Bay, tuning them up, and using them in building my massive bench. All is going well; sandpaper easily flattens the soles, and little cleaning, oil, and wax gets them to looking a bit better, and Scary Sharp on the band saw table has gottem me a super edge on the old irons. But I had a fore plane (about 22" long) and now (today) and jack plane (about 16") long, and when I tapped the back end of the plane, adjusting the cut, the handles busted clean off! What am I doing wrong? I didn't think I was really smacking the planes that hard, but... I've read about adjusting these old woodies, but maybe I need you guys to give me the nitty gritty on such...?
Thanks for any help guys - I've got a nice jointer and try plane that I don't want this to happen to!
David
