Shavings and Planes
Garrett in Victoria
>I recently posted a review of Cosman's DVD's on planing. Someone on one of the Canadian fora mentioned that Cosman uses very expensive Lie Nielsen planes, I suppose implying that that's the secret to his success. He also asked if I had actually tried Cosman's techniques.
Well, my planes are neither Lie Nielsens nor Veritas. In fact, they are Stanleys that I bought more than 40 years ago.

In any event, I followed Cosman's instructions and spent several hours tuning them up and sharpening the irons.
Then, I applied his technique in using the planes, and here's the result on maple, oak, and spruce. I can't remember which plane produced which shaving, but I saw no discernible difference.

The upper right one is hard maple:

While this result is probably the norm for foks on this Board, it's breakthrough stuff for me.
Unfortunately, it's now going to be awfully hard to justify the purchase of those expensive beauties.
Cheers, Garrett
