Subject: Planing without a blade

I was interested to find how long it took to hone the Smoothcut blade on my Stanley #7 with a 6000 waterstone (only) following a grind on 600 sandpaper.
I duly did this - it took about 20 strokes - returned the blade to the plane, and set about planing some Jarrah.
The plane felt hard to push but it was producing extremely thin, lacy, full-length shavings. However the surface of the timber felt rougher than expected and there was not even the hint of shine. I swapped to my HNT Gordon Try Plane. This produced even thinner shavings, and more importantly left a glowing surface on the Jarrah.
This can't be right, I thought. Obviously the blade has a rough leading edge, a result of poor sharpening. So I removed the blade from the #7 to examine it more closely - to find that the chipbreaker had slipped down over the front of the blade, and all my shavings had been produced by the chipbreaker itself!
So who needs a blade - just sharpen up the chipbreaker!!! :)

Derek
