Make your own striking or marking knife
Derek Cohen (in Perth, Australia)
>Shortly after Adam published his (first?only?) article on his striking knife, I had the yen to make one as much like it as possible. Chris Schwarz had one as well and I recall that he mentioned that they were quite rare and, thus, difficult to purchase.
It occurred to me that the overall plan of a striking knife was similar to a spade bit, and I built one from this material and reported it on this forum at the time.
Using it, however, was not quite what I had imagined - not really pleasant at all. Not only did it lack the hand support I was used to with my other marking knives, but I was in constant danger of marking myself more than the timber!
So it is another tool that languishes on the shelf. However the old spade bits in my drawer now took on a new significance, a source of quality steel for knives.
Below are pictures of a striking knive, a marking knife, and an awl made from old spade bits.
