Sources for quartersawn beech?

James Watriss

>I've finally taken the plunge and made my first wooden coffin-shaped smoother. I cheated a bit, and blew out the mouth, patching it with a dovetail-style key, a la the japanese method of patching up their planes, but the thing is done now, making some OK shavings, and I'm ready to try my hand at this again.

Anyone in here know of a source for really good quartersawn beech? I've been looking around up near me (Boston) but haven't found much, yet. Looking for 12/4 at least.

Would 16/4 do?

>I have one board, that's been drying for 10 years in my shop. Nominal 4 x 6, it measures at 3 1/2" by 5 1/2" by 7 feet long.

I have promised a couple pieces of it already, and I'd like to keep some for myself when I decide to make a few planes, but I guess I could spare a couple pieces. I don't remember the grain orientation, but at that size you can cut it at an angle if needs be. 12" long should be long enough for a coffin smoother?

I could send a piece to the first two people indicating interest, in exchange for a donation to Woodcentral and a picture of the completed plane (that idea comes from John Stegall).

Let me know if you're interested..

Question: I thought riftsawn was the best grain orientation for a plane. Am I wrong?
