We were posted to Malaysia some years ago and bougth a lot of local pewter. Malaysia is/was one of the world's great sources of tin, the primary metal in pewter. Pewter is quite soft compared to pot metal, can be dinged and bent easily, and is very sensitive to heat, e.g. a bent bottom can be straightened by carefully warming the pewter and simply massaging it or/or pressing it onto a flat surface. Unless it is highly polished, the surface develops deep silver gray patina.
None of the above applies to white metal.
