planing knots

>guys, i'm getting it! i had a breakthrough last night while practicing my surfacing technique on some pine that i bought from piedmont lumber - instead of home depot where i had been buying everything previously! i managed to get one face surfaced to the point that it did not rock with the assistance of some crude winding sticks (leftover 2" wide, 3/4" thick, 24" long poplar).
my only snag is that the knots are KILLING me! what do you guys do? readjust the plane depth for a shallower cut?
BTW i'm having success with raising panels using a jack plane but i just purchased an anant carriage maker's plane so that i can plane right up to a stepped edge for that extra NICE appearance. thanks again, folks!!!
