>On Page 20, column 1, of the November Popular Woodworking (in the "Q&A" part of the magazine), you suggest that someone buy a 5/16" mortise chisel, "which is the right size for handmade mortises in 3/4" stock." Then, in column 2, you say in response to another letter, "The rule of thumb...is that tenon thickness should be half the thickness of your stock."

I can't make the math work - twice 5/16" is 5/8", not 3/4". Please de-confuse me.

Sorry. There are (at least) two rules of thumb for tenons. One for each hand, I suppose.

On the one hand, in machine woodworking, the common rule is tenons are one-half as thick as your stock. I personally think this is in part because a 3/8" hollow-chisel mortise chisel simply works better than the smaller sizes, which are prone to clog because of their small escapements.

On the other hand, in hand woodworking, the common rule is tenons are one-third your stock thickness (and, incidentially, tenon length should be five times the tenon's thickness). Because it's common to work with slightly over-thick stock in hand woodworking, 5/16" works very very well for me.

If you try to make a 3/8" mortise in 3/4" stock with a mortise chisel, you will risk busting apart your joint in fragile species, such as cherry.

I hope this helps dispell my inconsistency. Need a job as a magazine editor? (I might – if I keep doing crap like that!)

OK, I know it is a Rule of Thumb, but let's consider the hall table I am building at present. The legs are 40x40mm at the top (tapering below the apron) and the apron is 19mm wide. So the apron tenon will be 1/3 of 19mm (=6.3mm), say a 1/4" mortise chisel (yeah, I mix Metric and Imperial all the time). I was expecting to make the apron tenons just 3/4" (19mm) long, which a little over half your recommendation (1/4" x 5 = 1 1/4").

What am I getting wrong?

So, a blind mortice & tenon in 40 x 19 stock as you're discussing gives a tenon/mortise width of 6mm and a tenon length of 2/3 of 40mm = 25mm approx.

A lapped dovetail leaves 1/3 of drawer face behind and is cut 2/3 of the way through the thickness

A bridle joint has the tenon 1/3 width and the two outside cheeks of the mortise also at 1/3 width.

A half lap is cut halfway into the joint (oddly enough)

I could keep on going, but you get the drift.

This is (I believe) the old British standard and works well for me.

Most of the tenon's strength is in its length. That is where the face grain is. I actually think that the rule of thumb for tenon length is pretty good (I first picked it up in Holtzapffel's "Construction, Action and Application of Cutting Tools.")

Tables are tricky because you are constrined by the size of the legs, but there are ways to deal with it. I typically offset my tenons from the centerline (making a wider shoulder facing the inside of the table base). And then I miter the ends of the tenon so they almost meet in the leg.

Warning: opinion follows

Personally, I think a 3/4"-long tenon is too short for most work in 3/4"-thick stock. I could see some applications for it in small and lightweight doors. Or in frame-and-panel work that was going to be secured to another structure. But I'd be uncomfortable with that short of a tenon in a table.

And if it were a drawer housing, the topmost rail would be double dovetailed into the leg posts, and the tenons on the lower rail(s) would be doubled.

For example, this is what the Seymours brought over from the Axminster area of England to Boston in the late 1700's. I REALLY like this join. For a leg of 1-1/2" to 40mm thickness, two 5/16" tenons work well and can be arranged to leave plenty of meat in the leg outside the tenons. This is a good old practice IMO.

I've always favored the approach in Charles Hayward's "Woodwork Joints" (page 49 for those playing our home game). It shows strategies that have worked for me to get extra meat in an apron/leg joint: how to offset tenons, notch meeting tenons, miter meeting tenons.

I'm not saying the 3/16" tenon won't work; I'm just trying to explain my approach.

1. Draw a rectangle 40 mm square.

2. Pick two intersecting faces as the outside faces.

3. From the inside faces of your leg draw a pair of lines 19 mm apart to represent the rails, but importantly in this example,

4. Inset the outside face of your rails 3 mm in from the outside face of your leg. This creates a 3 mm reveal. Reveals are optional so this is just for illustration.

5. Draw two lines to represent the thickness of a 6 mm tenon (which is the same as the mortise) centred on the end of each rail. The two lines will be parallel to the outside face of the legs.

6. Where these pairs of mortice lines intersect nearest the outside corner of the leg will determine the length of the mortise, and of the tenon.

7. If you've drawn it correctly you'll see that the depth of your mortices is 30.5 mm overall.

8. Draw a line to create a mitre at the corner of the mortice that goes from the inside corner to the outside corner of the leg.

9. The length of the tenon on the inside face of the rail is in theory 24.5 mm.

10. In practice you would cut the tenon about 28- 29 mm and mitre each one so that they almost meet in the corner.

Incidentally, I teach the rule of thirds to my learners too just as I was taught many moons ago. The wrinkle is that you pick a chisel one size up. In your case 19/3 = 6.33 mm and I'd use an 8 mm chisel.

This rule perhaps matters more where frame members are of equal thickness, such as a door frame. The idea is to remove 1/2 the material from each member to weaken each by the same amount. In a mortice and tenon of this type you generally add a bit of thickness to the tenon to try and even up the mass of material in each part, and this usually considered to be the best compromise. You do have to be careful not to make the mortice cheeks too fragile.

In your scenario because you have a greater mass of leg than you do rail there'd be nothing to stop you making a 10 or 12 mm thick barefaced mortice and tenon, i.e., one with a shoulder on only the outside face. Or you could put a 3 mm shoulder on the inside face, use a 10 mm tenon and 6 mm shoulder on the outer face. If you offset the rail as you drew by 3 mm you'd still have a 9 mm outer mortice cheek on the leg, which would likely be plenty strong enough.

You're looking to maximise long grain to long grain gluing surface area, and the dimensions you were planning on using seem a bit small to me.

Also don't forget to make the mortice length just over 2/3 of the rails width so that there is plenty of meat at the top of the leg to stop a plug of wood popping out if the joint should rack a bit, or the rail width grow. This also means making the tenon 0.5- 1 mm less in its width than the mortice is long to allow for the rail expansion and contraction-- this assumes a rail width of about 100- 120 mm.

If the rail is narrower you can reduce this sloppiness a hair. If it's wider you're starting to get into the territory where a forked M&T might be a good option where only the upper fork is glued. The forks don't always have to be to be equal in size. You could have a wide fork at the top and a narrower fork at the bottom.

Lastly, if there is a rule of thumb for a stopped tenon length/ mortice depth I'd probably say go for about 4 times tenon thickness, but that the depth can be adjusted a bit one way or another to account for circumstances. Slainte.

But if you put the peg too far away from the shoulder, you can blow out the end of the tenon when you draw the bores.

I've found that 1-1/4"-long tenons are perfectly suited and sturdy for drawboring in 4/4 stock.

I realize it's an off-the-wall suggestion, and would prefer to drop it here because it doesn't really fit what's being discussed. To answer your question, I don't find 3/16" thick tenons fragile, in the circumstance that you're relying on glue. And I like to saw joints, so mismatch isn't an issue, nor is shoulder planing tenon faces. They certainly WOULD be fragile if you're gonna drawbore the tenon, and in that case should be avoided. Some Federal furniture (my interest at the moment) uses a bare minimum of structural wood, and you have to work hard at the joints in some cases. But that's my interest, not what's being discussed.

I'm a fan of yours and am interested in the discussion you mentioned. Are you using Hayward's book 'Woodworking Joints', and where is the venue? The blog or PW?

Even the optimum diameter of the bore and whether the peg starts off round or square are significant. Even MC and air drying vs. kiln drying should make a significant difference. When chopping mortises, the bevel angle also makes a difference, as different species have different failure characteristics when undergoing this type of punishment. It seem that the characteristics that make a particular wood good for forming mortises can in some ways be opposed to those that make for good tenons.

No, I'm not suggesting that we should be making all our doors with cherry rails and hickory stiles and poplar panels, or whatever. Nor am I suggesting that we need a digital caliper and an Excel spreadsheet and Identifying Wood to calculate each and every scantling, but a "one size fits all" approach can easily result in very heavy furniture. And, you know what happens to heavy furniture, don't you? It gets dragged across the carpet, probably after being loaded with a Thanksgiving spread, instead of being lifted, and that is more abuse than most joints can tolerate.

A picture for clarification

Here is a rough, non-scaled sketch (Paint) of the dimensions of the hall table: 40x40mm legs with a 19x75mm apron (which may be divided into two sections, one of 25mm and one of 50mm, to lighten the appearance of the apron - so the tenon dimension will likely be recalculated - the original dimensions were really just offered for illustration of Chris' rule). The legs are through tenoned into the tabletop (this tenon also to be calculated), and the appearance will be of the top "floating" on the legs and apron. Well, that's the plan!

>For reference, the tabletop is Jarrah while the legs and apron are Blackbutt - both extremely hard Aussie woods. For those unfamiliar with Blackbutt, it is a light timber generally used for flooring. Jarrah, as you are aware, is a reddish-dark brown.

There could be problems such as the top splitting as it shrinks, or the the tenon shoulders opening up as the top expands.

Incidentally I assume you mean rail when you say apron for apron is the American term for rail. I do find your terminology somewhat interesting you being in Ockerland 'an all, but you could be an American living there, ha, ha.

The sketch you put up in Paint looks more like the proportions for an M&T used for a middle rail in a frame, or stretcher in a table or chair than a top rail in a leg to rail construction, which might be suitable if the top of the leg runs on quite some distance. Slainte.

There is plenty of old work with through tenons or very deep tenons on cabinet doors or sash. There are mortices in table legs that meet in the corner with tenons chamfered to avoid hitting each other. I have repaired tenons that split out an inch and a half beyond the peg hole. A tenon with only 3/4 inch beyond the peg would be vulnerable to this type of failure.
