Honing with Veritas Mk.II Power Sharpening System

>Wanted to ask users of this system of any successful methods that they've used when honing chisels, gouges, plane blades etc. with the PSS and Veritas green honing compound. I have an extra set of platters and could use spray adhesive to fasten cloth, felt, leather, etc to the platter to be charged with honing compound. What methods have people used that worked particularly well? Thanks for any suggestions.

>I use the 5 micron film followed by 0.5 micron on the opposite side of a thin platter. Seems to work fine for me. The film is available from LV (and other sources) in self adhesive sheets.

>Hi Chico,

I'm interested in this subject as well. Can you please tell me:

- What adhesive do you use to attach the leather to the platter?

- How do you compensate for the thickness of the leather? It must be thicker than the PSA sanding disk.

Thanks,

>Hi Hoa,

Since stropping does not require high precision like honing, I don't even use the tool rest for stropping. I glued the leather on 1/8" thick ply with T-III then epoxy that on the aluminium plate.

Although tool rest can easily accomodate an additional 3/16" or 1/4" thickness on top of the plate.

Results beyond belief scary! ;-)

>I used a worn out 0.5um disk and added the green crayon to that. It produced horrible results, with the bevel completely rolled. Then I realized that if I only use the *left* side of the tool rest for stropping with the green compound, then it works just fine to polish the bevel. This is quite obvious since you should only strop toward the pointy end of the bevel, and never into the point. But it's one of those mistakes you have to make once to learn the right way to do it.
