Query for Chisel Purists

But seriously I am full of questions about why things are the way they were. Not reluctant to reveal my ignorance in these matters, I am currently puzzled by chisels. No doubt because I don't know how to use them, at least properly, I can't figure out why the old timely chisels were so long.
A long chisel is unbalanced for dovetail chopping. For pareing I grab the thing down by the bevel with my hand wrapped around the blade (I like the fat Japanese blades for this reason). Even for a thrusting- pareing operation the long lever arm seems a disadvantage. Seriously, I can't figure out how the long chisels are used to advantage unless it is to reach somewhere where I have not reached before.
I could keep Adam in PW articles for years. Maybe he will send me a hat-red.
