Need help cleaning a wooden twofold rule

eric

>In a box lot from tonight's auction I found a 6 inch two-fold rule that is completely covered in grime. I cannot find a manufacturer's mark. Under the caliper is the number 122 which is also on the back of the caliper. Is there a best(least destructive) way to clean this up? Soap and water, mineral spirits?

Thanks,

Eric

I use...

Ted Owen, Pittsburgh

>Murphy's Oil Soap and warm water to clean old wooden items. Scrub only with my hands or old t-shirt. Dry thoroughly, then run a hair dryer over it.

Best, Ted

>Since they're usually made of hard fine grain wood and brass, I experimented with Simichrome polish over the whole thing. It worked surprisingly well. I Not only cleaned the wood, but the brass as well. You can just clean the grime off the brass, or make it bright with a little more effort. It cleans the wood, but I suppose if you over polished it you could remove the paint in the markings.
