Can the Tormek produce a cambered edge?

Marc Burt

>Can the tormek produce a cambered edge for a smoothing plane? Not really interested in a tight radius like on a scrub. The toolrest doesn't really look like it would allow for uneven pressure to produce the camber.

Thanks for your help.

>Marc,

due to much use, my blade holding jig has quite a bit of slop on the bar.

I grind, then black the grinding bevel with felt tip. Next I press on one corner while lifting the opposite corner. Counting about ten seconds. Mind the fingers don't get trapped!!!. Examine the result, which should be removal of metal from approx one third of the width. Then press opposite corner and lift the other, to try and get a symmetrical result.

This is not a true camber but a good starting point. The curve is perfected on a coarse stone using point finger pressure in about five positions across the edge.

Best wishes,

David Charlesworth

Tormek #SVD-110 Jig

Steve Elliott

>The #SVD-110 "Tool Jig with Torlock" is a flat tool rest that allows you to rotate the tool from side to side by hand while maintaining a constant grind angle. I use it to round the corners of my smoothing plane blades.

Of all the special add-on jigs Tormek offers, this one strikes me as the most useful.

>Thanks for everybody's help. I think I will bite the bullet. I have a lot of non-woodworking stuff that I sharpen and I think the flexibility of the Tormek will make it a better solution for my needs than other systems on the market.
