Now THATS a Saw !

Todd Hughes

>Well I normaly don't buy painted saws but when I saw this one I just had to have it. No the Miss Jazz isn't a stunted munchkin this saw is really over 4 ft. long ! Not just some cobbed together fake saw either but rather it is a real Disston with an enlarged No.12 type handle and steel blade with a nib everything in perfect proportions. I have seen 2 others of these and apparently they were a promotional or hardware store advertising item. This example unfortunatly has been painted over to advertise a sharpening service. When I first got it I thought about stripping the paint off but I like folk art stuff and it has sort of grown on me and I think I will hang it over my front door and leave it be.

....Is funny but I always wanted one of these saws, just thought it would be neat to put on the wall, but never really believed I would find one. The two I had seen one was in a museum and the other at a big tool show priced higher then a nice no.1 Stanley. So when my gal Jazz showed me about this one at the auction I was pretty excited. Ended up getting it for $70 which is probably the most I ever spent for a saw. But then if you look at it as by the pound probably not to bad....Yeah, I know I'm lucky ! .....Todd

>Todd,

How thick is that blade?

Looks to be a rip, tho I was having a hard time focusing on the blade. ;~)

Think it would actually cut wood?

I'd never even heard of these Promotional saws.

I think I may have a sawset for it.

Damn, you sure are a lucky guy.

A local hardware store still has some of these "giant" tools on the wall.

It's a nice store :-)

Annual "my gal Jazz" sophomoric comment contest ?

Cooper Suter

>I'm thinking my entry would have something to do with " ...with a nib everything in perfect proportions....".

Or maybe something to do w/ "Not just some cobbed together fake..."

or "...with an enlarged No.12 type handle..."

or "This example unfortunatly has been painted over..."

or "...When I first got it I thought about stripping..."

or "...if you look at it as by the pound probably not to bad.."

or "...showed me about this one at the auction I was pretty excited.."

or "....Ended up getting it for $70 which is probably the most I ever spent..."

Paul missed a good oppurtunity on the line "I have seen 2 others of these and apparently they were a promotional or hardware store advertising item". I think its the same concept that makes people drive out of their way for overpriced average food at that restaurant w/the owl logo.

Say, didn't I read something once about Todd's having been an english major? Could all his writings be more than literal? Anyone wanna start a reading group and discuss the higher, hidden, and symbolic meanings of his posts?

You were so carried away with the sophomoric comments that you forgot to add that you've lusted over one just like it for about two years, the saw that is.

......lusted over one just like......

Cooper Suter

>........yeah, but that saw is held by an eighty year old man named Cliff, and there's other more appropriate venues where I go for that sort of post.

Not that there's anything WRONG w/it though! (in the words of Sienfeld).

Actually Todd, there's one in a local collection here in Toledo also.

Not as nice of nibs on it though. Etc. Etc. Etc.

What are the deminsions

Todd O. Cronkhite Maine Native in FL. Exile :~(

>Todd,

Just out of curiousity, how long is the blade, how wide at the heel and toe? How tall is the nib, how thick is the blade? How many tpi? how about the handle, how long, wide, thick?

Dunno why, but I just can't get that saw out of my mind.

You are going to hang above the door on the inside aren't you.

Bet you're glad there was no hang hole in it eh?
