Help me troubleshoot my scraper...

Eric

>I built a scraper plane ala Stephen Shepherd's from a previous FWW mag. I sharpened and set the blade, and went for a few test shaves but had no luck. When the blade is set in the scraper body, and then the screw turned to put a slight bow in the blade, the edges of the blade deflect slightly down, and the center of the blade is not in contact with the board. Both corners of the blade dig into the piece. Any idea what I need to change to make this work? I've looked the drawings and pics over many times and I can't see anything I did wrong (not that I'd rule that out....)

Thanks,

Eric

>When you sharpened the blade did it turn out convex? If it's flat try setting the scraper blade in on a piece of glass its really easy to get the blade set in there to low and the blade corners start catching.

>What angle does your blade sit in the body when attacking the wood. If it's tilted back from vertical, then putting a bow in it would lift the center, I think. Sitting here looking at my 112, the blade will only tilt forward, and can't come up to full vertical. Of course it doesn't have an adjustment to bow the blade either. Likewise the Stanley 80 blade is tilted forward, and the screw that sets the bow then sets the depth as well.

>The blade is totally flat. It makes sense that the blade should tilt forward, and then the bevel or burr of the blade can do the scraping. I thought a lot about this, and studied the pics in the magazine some more, but my scraper looks just like the one in the magazine. So my problem with all that is it worked for him, but not me? What gives? I may try turning it upside down and trying again, this would change the angle and allow me to try the blade forward option (I think?...). Thanks for the ideas, I'll let you know what I figure out.

Thanks,

Eric

>I just looked at the article and the only thing I can think of that will cause your problem is if you got the blade in the plane at the opposite angle. If the top of the blade is angled away from the side the screw is on,it should work. If the blade top is angled toward the screw side however, tightening the screw will push the center of the scaper up and off the work to be scraped.Unless I'm misunderstanding your problem---Jack
