Wenge wood

Steve Kubien

>Hi everybody,

A buddy of mine is building a rather fancy shed/structure and is thinking of using some wenge for door pulls. Good idea? Bad idea? How does wenge hold up outside and what do you finish it with? He would prefer to avoid a varnish-type finish.

Thanks,

Steve Kubien

>Steve ... Wenge is a favorite of mine - never used it outdoors but here's what I do know:

1. It is splintery as all-get-out; probably not a good choice for a handle unless your friend has cast iron hands

2. It really likes oil finishes

3. Pretty open grain structure; if you don't like this look you can use a grain filler (not my first choice) or sand in tung oil or BLO.

Good luck to your friend ... rj
