Preping a new Hock blade for a Stanley 80 scraper

>What, if any, prep work on the raw blade is necessary?

I've never used a no 80 before, and after spending 4 hours flattening the sole on a diamond stone, I'm not too anxious to spend another 2 flattening the back of the Hock blade if I don't have to.

I can tell from the initial grind I need to hone at about a 45 degree angle, but do I need to flatten and polish the back and then which way does it go in the scraper and how does one go about making the burr on that?

Thanks

Alan

>I don't recall ever reading that a #80 sole has to be flattened. It should be reasonably flat, without burrs on the bottom that will cause scratches in the wood. Not sure why anyone would spend 4 hours flattening a scraper sole. I use sandpaper, silicone carbide I think is a wet or dry sandpaper sold in most auto supply stores, for inital flattening of all my irons and planes. On the Hock irons I think I start around 220. You probably do not need to polish the edge for rough scraping, but the edge is similar to a plane iron; a sharp edge needs to be polished on two faces. I turn a burr on an angled scrpaer blade pretty much the same way as one that is not angled, but it will not require as much pressure. You will need to experiment with the angle to get the cut you want, as the 80 is not adjustable. The flat face is the one that does the cutting.

>I flattened the sole of my #80. Maybe overkill but better safe than sorry. Look at Lee Valley's instructions for sharpening their cabinet scraper. It applies to the Stanley #80 as well.
