O/T Been Playing Nursemaid to a.....

Todd O. Cronkhite Maine Native in FL. Exile :~(

>Newborn kitten for the past week. thedaughter brings home a female kitten, I said "go get it spayed" and as usual my words went in one ear and out the other. Kitten grows up and get preg-o. Has a problem pregnancy and baby is born C-section. She brings pre-me home and for 2 days hand feeds it as Momma cat has no interest in the kitten. Than we got wind of a cat that had just finished nursing her babies, so we go see the folks that have it and they say, sure you can use it to nurse your kitten, but we don't want it back when it's done. Just great I thought. Now surragate mother will nurse, but I have to take her to the baby every 3 hours as she won't go by herself. thew baby is 8 days old today, and now nurses for 30-40 minutes each time. the daughter has dumped Nursemaid duty on to me, so it's me that gets up every 3 hours to feed the baby. I've enjoyed seeing the baby grow I must confess, and have taken a liking to the surragate mother also. She's a very sweet cat, not much more than a kitten herself.

I admit to being an ol' softie for helpless critters, it's most humans that I have contempt for these days. Thank goodness for the sactuary of WC.

Do have a question about cats tho. What's going on with Nursing Mom when she raises up on her rear legs a little, putting her butt in the air and prances in a circle?

>Hi Todd,

Been there, done that! I raised a litter of five from about a week and a half old. Bottle fed them and the whole routine. Just a point, new kittens can't go to the bathroom without "stimulation" usually supplied by mom. Since I didn't have a mother cat around, a wet paper towel worked for my bunch. They grew up to be great cats.

It sounds like New Mom *may* be going into heat. I'd keep her away from unneutered males unless you want another batch. :)

>I thought that might indicate that she may be going into heat, so you guys confirmed that suspection.

Skip, surragate Mom licks baby alot and it's pooping just fine. :~)

As I type Surragate Mom is rollong all over my computer table, purring, rubbing her face on the keyboard, and showing signs of being playful. She's Calico with all fous paws white. and if I didn't know better would say that she's a Maine Coon cat. Think I'll name her Sugar as she's so sweet.

>Hi Todd,

Once a few more of our animals die off I'm getting a Maine Coon! As grusome as that sounds - we have 3 cats and a dog all but one (a cat) over 12 years old. The last of the litter I hand raised died close to last Christmas. Cat owners everwhere may have noted his passage as the IQ of cats everywhere went up a few points. He was stupid - but cute. :)

We got a deal

>Our Feline American Princess (and boy, is she! Never seen a cat who can show "mad" so clearly when we offend her) is a mix of Maine Coon and Manx - we think. She's a pound kitty, so we don't know for sure, but she's got characteristics of both. Quite a cat, up there with our legendary cats.

>Good for you, Todd. We have a family of foster cats who bring me more pleasure than any item I have ever wanted or acquired. Nothing counts more than kindness.

>Sorry to hear about your kitty. My wife and I adopted a pair of Maine Coon breeder returns (divorcing couple). Sweetest cats ever. Check with your local breeders and you may be able to get a young adult and avoid kitten problems.

>A Maine Coon "adopted" me - a stray that just showed up at the back door. I already had one stray I was feeding, so what's one more little mouth? "Robert Redfur" was the sweetest, most affectionate cat I have ever had, altho not the brightest. He couldn't quite get using a liter box, so he lived his life outside.

The other stray looks like a cross between a seal point Siamese and a Persian. With slightly crossed blue eyes, she looks a little like her namesake; Barbara Catsand. Maybe you've heard of the movie they made together - "The Way We Purr".

Red had medical issues - thyroid problems - so that I refered to him has my 6 million dollar cat, but it was a very sad day when I had to have him put down.

Sounds like she might be a Colourpoint, Neal.

Cats are like planes

>I have more than I can use at one time. I'm up to three strays that I'm feeding now. I think there must be some sort of Kitty Network...."Hey, guys; there's a sucker in the white house on the corner - good food!"
