Handing a door question

Scott Burr in foggy Ben Lomond,CA

>Hi All, I need to hang a new kitchen door this weekend. It's going into the existing jam. It it better to mount the hinges on the jam then mark the hinge location on the door or the other way around? Thanks for listening.

>Scott .... having hung numerous doors in existing jambs (in many restorations) I have tried a number of techniques - the followning is one I find quickest and easiest:

1. Check the existing frame/opening for plumb and square - if it is out of square or plumb correct the situation as much as possible.

2. Dry fit the door to the opening.

3. Install the fitted door in the opening using shims and wedges to hold it stationary

4. Mark butt locations on the door by scribing from the butt mortices on the jamb.

Good luck .... rj
