O/T Need Startup Config cleanup help

>This is a spin-off from the post I had below titled Closing Programs.
In my windows 98 Joe has got me to the point of knowing how get to the Close Programs screen and how to close programs, but when I go to that screen there is 53 things open, and I don't know which ones I should leave open. Can anybody make any suggestions? there is abbreviations that I have no idea what they mean, and I'd hate to close a program that is critical to boot up and than not be able to boot up again. What a royal pain in the buttski eh.
