The World Conspires to Prevent me Watching St. Roy

Bob Hutchins in central TX

>Usually it's just Her Ladyship wanting to go to Sam's or somewhere or making me do chores. Last night, however, she managed to make the power go off until after the show was over.

Roy was making a chest from cedar and cypress salvaged after hurricane Isabelle. It was the first time I've ever noticed him using a NEW hand tool. He had a nice LN rabbet plane that he used to finish raising panels. He showed how to make arched top panels, but of course that was after HL made the power go out. (Had to have been she; couldn't have been the thunderstorm that blew thru (:>,)

>Bob,

Stop whining! (Just kidding.) Some of us never get to see Saint Roy-like me, for instance.

Here I am, living in a great huge megalopolis, where I get THREE--count 'em, THREE--PBS stations and not even one of them carries my favorite show! Needless to say I've stopped sending contributions. They still call me during their beg-a-thons, and I take the opportunity to tell them exactly why I no longer support them: no Woodwright's Shop, no Red Green, no money.

When I lived in my favorite little home town in upstate NY, where they showed both Saint Roy and Red, I saw Roy use several new tools from time to time: he had a Lee-Nielsen beading tool, a Record rabbet plane (a number 778?) what looked like a Lie-Nielsen Independence dovetail saw, and I'm sure there were others I've forgotten about. I don't think St. Roy is at all averse to new tools; for him a good hand tool is a good user no matter when it was made. I think it's the wholesale slaughter of electrons that he's opposed to.

>When St Roy did a show here in Northen Virginia at the Woodcraft store he used the LN dovetail saw. As a historian he advocates the work style of the past but he uses reproduction tools if available to preserve the historical value in the vintage tool. He even told a story about finding an axe head in an old well in Williamsburg and having the blacksmith make new ones in an attempt to be able to work in the same fashion as the past woodworkers without consuming the tools. >The local guys only show Roy on their second channel, which they don't broadcast. I could see it if I bought cable, but why would I want to buy more TV? Therefore, I buy the shows that interest me on vhs and let it go at that. Still way cheaper than cable.

And I continue to support PBS, basically for their news and nature/science shows, which are superior. I really don't see not supporting them for one show.
