Phishing?

Jerry Nicholson

>I got a charge on my credit card for $7.77 from someplace called " WP-TEMPLATEOFTHE.N SITTINGBOURNE GBR " and would like to know if anyone else has gotten something similar. It did not come from Paypal but I have recently made a number of charges on Paypal using that credit card. The credit card company is going to credit my account so I am not out anything (yet) but you can bet I will be watching closely.

>Jerry .... not from that organization, but I got a similar charge from an organization called "Friends of the Internet" - 3 months before I caught it because the amount was so small. Amex credited my account and gave me a new card.

I have completely stopped buying anything over the internet - still use the net to shop, but I now call the 800 number to place orders. Probably isn't any safer (and of course it doesn't work with eBay) but I feel a little more secure.

>At least with eBay you can mail a check or money order to some sellers if you don't want to use a card. I have never had a problem with eBay and only shop at places like LV or well known dealers

>Hey Jerry, I just noticed a charge for 8.27 and 1% international service fee on my card ... from Wp-templateofthe.n Sittingbourne. Of course I called the credit card company and asked them about it... and all he could say was that it was for computer programming/software from great britian ... I asked for a phone number for the company and he said they didn't have one on file. So I asked for a dispute form... and google that phrase which lead me here... and only here. So I'm curious to know if you have any updated information? were you able to find anything else out about them? did your credit card company dispute the charge? what where they able to determine? and did you end up having to get a new card? thanks... Tony

>I called the credit card company and they credited my account with the amount of the fraudulent charge with no hassle at all. I had them cancel the existing cards and issue new ones. I haven't tried to find out anything more about the outfit that made the charge but I am watching my credit card transactions very closely - I check them on-line every day or two. Pretty clever - only scam a little bit in the hopes that people won't notice it.

>I got a charge from them for $8.27 as well. This is the second one

from a bogus site in two months, time to cancel the card :-(

I wonder why this is the only hit on google?

Check this out *LINK*

>I tried a Google search on parts of the phrase, and came up with the link below. They're a company that sells "web design templates" under the name "templateofthenet" and they are located in Sittingbourne, Kent. They seem to have genuine contact information. Their "lifetime membership" cost is $8.27 (so maybe you got a good deal :-) ).

Have you scrubbed your machine for spyware lately?

>I use Spybot, and Adaware, along with NAV, a hardware firewall in the ethernet router, and Zone Alarm. They probably got the credit card number from some merchant, I am thinking through PayPal somehow. I haven't had any more bogus charges since I got the new charge card number but I am watching closely.

What if...

A merchant you've bought something from has a trojan that's gotten hold of your credit card details? There are many windows 2000 servers on the net, and they're notoriously leaky.

>I had a charge made to my Visa on 9/14/05. Same exact description "WP-TEMPLATEOFTHE.N SITTINGBOURNE" for $8.27. The thing I resent most is spending more than $8.27 of my time researching what the heck this was, going through the "press 1" cycle, then waiting on hold while the credit card verifies that the charge will be removed. Grrrr.

>We just found the same charge on our account from the same place. Not related to PayPal in our case, that card has never been used there. Same old message - user beware. Thanks for posting and creating this little community of joy.

>I just got my MC statement, and likewise, had the notorious charge hiding there as well. I cancelled my card immediately (call center exchange to follow)

Man with Cheerful "Apu"-like Accent: "How are you this evening?"

Me: "Well...I'm kind-of FREAKING OUT!!!"

MWCAA: "Alright, ma'am..."

I predict "freaking out" will now be the trendiest phrase in all of India, all thanks to Template of Doom, er, the Net. And if that isn't worth $8.27, what is?
