Conger - The Irish diaspora in Munich

>I have posted some pix here in the past from 'Old Yurp', and some were pleased.

I was travelling from Torino (Turin as in FIAT, and the shroud) over the Alps back to Munich, and as luck would have it I missed my train in Verona by ONE minute. The next train was 8 hours later!

I shanked it from the station into the center of town and took some pictures.

Verona has a very fine arena from 30AD, or 1970 years old. It is used nowadays for opera; while I was there they were staging Aida.

I sat at an open air cafe across from the Arena, and took this picture. Please forgive the quality; long exposure time... I steadied the camera on top of my wine bottle!

>I saw a lovely cafe with two young people sitting outside. I do not know why there was an oil painting hanging on the wall OUTSIDE... but that is Italy. Ahhh Bella Italia (see next post)!

Again apologies for poor quality pic... no flash. Just as well. It would have been intrusive.

Conger - The Irish diaspora in Munich

>And to conclude...

I visited the shroud in Torino. I was aware of being followed (over a distance of more than 1 mile!!) by someone discreetly, but VERY, interested in me and my camera. So I took a picture of him. He was VERY annoyed; I was glad I was in a place with a lot of people watching.

Anyways... I hope you enjoyed the sights as much as I did. All I can say is 'La vita è bella'

BTW... I have been mugged twice... once in New Orleans, and once in Copenhagen... both times in daylight. Experiences like this make one wary!

>I for one so enjoy seeing pics from Europe. I liked the little Cafe pic the best. Seemed quiet and serene.

Gotta watch those little slicksters, they're everywhere preying on the tourists and sailors, and man, can they ever run fast! We had the most trouble with them whilst in Triest (sp)Italy.

Thank you!

>Hi Conger,

Your photos have retrieved from the back of my mind some great memories of several days I spent in Firenze many years ago, whilst I was supposed to be attending a conference. I did manage to make my train from Firenze to Rome, but only because some very kind people helped me get to the right one. They didn't even seem to mind the way I was mangling their language, although earlier I had a couple of shop keepers smilingly suggest we switch to English.

I don't know why the gelato has never caught on over here. Do you find it in Munich? I also remember ordering plain 'capuccino', and not a 'half caff percent capuccino, with whip, and one equal on the bottom' (some of this is embarrassing). No young street toughs in Firenze, although this was 20 years ago. Sorry about your experience in New Orleans.

Thanks again, Wiley
