Rank amateur question, but it seems to me that the sole has to play a non-negligible part.
Has anyone tried sanding a board to an arbitrary level of smoothness, then ran a smoothing plane (with no iron in it) with the same downward pressure as if actually handplaning the board? Then compared it with a suitably comparative handplaned board for relative chatoyance?
Just curious...
