38° Bevel Blade for Veritas® Apron Plane?

Hoa Dinh in Alameda

>Hi Folks,

My 9 yr. son asked me for a "Featherweight Fret Saw" from LeeValley. I'm not sure if it's a good sign or bad sign ;-)

So I'm thinking, while I'm at it, I may as well add something to the order to save shipping cost (perfect excuse).

That "something" is a Veritas® Apron Plane.

I just wonder if instead of a plane with an A2 blade, I should get a plane with an HCS blade and an extra HCS blade for the same cost.

The extra HCS blade will be re-ground at 38° bevel for "difficult" grain. Is it useful?

Background: I already have a Veritas® Low-Angle Block Plane with a 38° and a 25° blades. In fact, my son's default plane is the LA block plane with a 38° fitted with a ball tail & knob.

Note: Still thinking about adding the Veritas® Bevel-Up Smoother to the order....

I'll take the contrary view.... go for the HCS...

First - you'll be able to teach him to sharpen it - and he'll be able to, easily...

Second - with a small plane like an apron plane, one isn't typically planing large amounts of material - and HCS will perform just fine...

And...I'm not just the president....I'm also a client....** (and I have the HCS blade)

You pushed me...

But now I have to explain to the Mrs. about the "extra" $175 item. ;-)

About my son sharpening the blade, he is using the Mk.II PSS just fine.
