>One small warning about UHMW. It moves. It deforms under repeated stress, like a very, very slow, wet noodle. You have to be conscious, when designing a precision jig that would incorporate it, to back it up and fence it in with something stiff. For example, I would not recommend it, all by its lonesome, for the runner in a tablesaw slot where you need to maintain parallel or perpendicular. I've tried, and spent way too much time adding and subtracting BugBear's cigarette papers, or the equivalent, trying to keep the jig square. It is a very seductive material, but I think I prefer using lignum vitae or teak or even maple and a can of Johnson's Paste Wax at hand to keep everything slippery. I also like purpleheat for sliding surfaces of jigs. It is stiff and hard, and it takes a very fine surface polish.
Oh man! I thought our ply shooting board was already more than heavy enough. MDF is even heavier, and I'm not getting any younger or any stronger :^) Other than that, yours a very good recommendation to use MDF for building jigs, etc. Note also that they make MDF (but not all of it, IIRC) with waterproof bonding agents, so if you face it with maple, you should be able to use hide glue to bond the maple to the MDF, so you can replace the maple when it wears.
At the other end of the glue scale, thin wooden bearing surfaces bonded to a substrate with epoxy can be persuaded to release with a heat gun. Epoxy just loses all control at elevated temperatures. However, I do not know where the epoxy breakdown temperature is in relation to MDF's breakdown temperature or the temperature at which MDF begins to release toxic fumes. This might be worth further study. OTOH, it's really easy to build a new shooting board, should you wear out your old one :^)
